Dane County Community History Project

The Dane County Department of Planning and Development and the Dane County Heritage Preservation Commission are pleased to announce the Dane County Community History Project.  This is an ongoing, crowdsourced online portal documenting people, place and events important to various communities within Dane County.  From public suggestions, the Dane County Heritage Preservation Commission will select several sites appropriate for installation of physical historical markers, with a focus on communities under-represented in the existing historical record.  Look for future announcements about the Heritage Preservation Commission’s upcoming public hearing, where nominators can speak about their proposals.

We’ve received 42 nominations for historic sites in our 2024 nomination cycle, including suggestions representing indigenous Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, women, and the LGBTQ+ community and including sites in cities, villages and towns throughout Dane County.  Take a look at a timeline and an interactive map to see what your neighbors have identified as important to Dane County’s history.  Is something missing?  Have an idea for a site that should be commemorated that’s important to your community?  Let us know, by filling out our online submittal form.

Thanks for all you do to support cultural resource planning in Dane County!  If you have questions or need more information, please contact me at the address below.
